Advancing transformative solutions for climate change mitigation

For 38 consecutive years, global temperatures have exceeded the global annual averages, and the impacts
of this are being felt all around the world. By significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and
vulnerability to climate change impacts, we can meet ambitious goals on access to urban opportunities
and drive ambition in both sub-national and national climate commitments. We need climate action that
reconciles top-down and bottom-up approaches with specific demonstration and pilot projects. Cities
need to establish frameworks that advance transformative solutions that mitigate climate change and
help communities adapt to its impacts.

10:00 am to 11:30 am: Accelerating Low-Carbon Transport Towards India’s NDCs

As India moves ahead to meet its developmental goals, mobility is going to play a critical role. Given the linkage of transport with India’s overall greenhouse gas emissions as well as the subsequent climate impacts for the country, WRI India’s Climate team and CEEW are hosting a high-level interaction exploring possible scenarios and impacts due to modal shifts (road, rail, air, navigation) with a focus on freight movement. The discussion will focus on impacts of freight across different transport corridors and benchmarking of distance and regions to facilitate the most efficient selection of modes. At the event, the WRI team would also release the draft Freight Rationalization Tool developed for Large Corporates in the presence of key stakeholders from business and policy.

With the building, construction and infrastructure development gradually moving towards an organised set-up that has active focus from large scale corporate players, the opportunity to improve material usage and subsequently impact emissions arising out of the construction phase seems to be a better reality. The impact would be huge considering the quantum of construction activity that is expected to happen over the next decade. The session would address avenues for large scale corporate developers to map out their value chain or scope three emissions and contribute to the overall climate goals for the country.
