Banthia is the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra. Mr. Banthia has a post graduate degree in Chemistry from Kanpur University and also a post graduate degree in Demography from London School of Economics. Prior to his posting in the state, Mr. Banthia was on a UN deputation to Nigeria as the chief technical adviser to the United Nation Population Fund for four years. Mr. Banthia previously held the position of Additional Chief Secretary (Public Health), Director of Census Operations, and Managing Director Maharashtra State Textile Corporation. He was also the Census Commissioner of India from 1999 to 2004 and rolled out the 2001 census. He has also served as Chairman of several committees. His area of interest includes Population and Development, Gender Issues, Urbanisation, Housing Conditions and Availability of Basic Amenities, Population and Environment.
