Connect Karo 2019
By 2030, over half of India's population will be living in cities. Urbanization is strongly linked to economic growth and productivity, and other social indicators like education, health and access to services. It is estimated that by 2020, urban India will account for more than 70 percent of India’s GDP. However, if unplanned, urbanization can increase inequality and social fragmentation, and negatively impact the environment. Many cities today are grappling with declining air quality, increased vehicular congestion, and poor quality and access to essential public services.
The Indian government recognizes that if we are to grow our economy, improve social indicators, and protect the environment, sustainable urban development is crucial. Thriving cities will lead to a prosperous country. With this in mind, Connect Karo 2018, “Thriving Cities, Prosperous Countries”, will focus on high-level discussions on critical urban issues like transport, land-use, air quality, housing, and energy, to identify key levers that could be used to accelerate infrastructure delivery and achieve the goal of access to all by 2022, when India turns 75.
About Connect Karo
As a Think-and-Do tank World Resources Institute (WRI) India believes evidence-based research is the foundation of public policy analysis. We aim at ensuring that human beings be at the heart of all policy decisions. To this goal, Connect Karo 2020 offers a platform to facilitate discussions and knowledge sharing amongst decision makes and stakeholders.
Connect Karo is part of a global series of events that WRI India organizes and hosts, to bring together leaders and policymakers committed towards designing inclusive, sustainable and climate forward Indian cities. Connect Karo 2020 will be held on 7-8 April, in New Delhi with presenters from various fields—air pollution, electric mobility, urban planning, Landscape restoration, climate mitigation, and public transit—sharing their insights and research findings.
The theme for the eighth edition of Connect Karo is Shaping India’s Growth Story: Clean, Green and Just, with a focus on various subjects such as urban planning, water infrastructure, air quality, and sustainability. WRI India’s mission is development of the country without sidestepping our sustainability, equity and livability goals. With these dominant concerns, we look to nurture society to live in ways that protect the planet and its capacity to provide for the needs and aspirations of current and future generations.
With Connect Karo 2020, WRI India aims at reducing resources mismanagement with a twofold objective:
1. How to make India growth story sustainable, more climate forward?
2. With ongoing and upcoming climate emergencies in mind, how do we tackle problems like migration, job loss, etc.?
This requires a transition in the economy towards being more climate positive and environment smart. Connect Karo 2020 will focus on engaging discussions on how to initiate this just transition. Connect Karo 2020 will lead by example, by initiating diverse, community-driven, inclusive conversations that will help make economic sense in a bid to move the green way.
During the two-day event, WRI India invites partners in government, business, and civil societies to develop innovative strategies that drive economic opportunities and a climate positive world.
To promote a shift towards public bicycle sharing, there is a pre-event Connect Karo on April 6, 2020 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. This event will be headed by mayors from various cities and will deliberate on accelerating non-motorized transport.
WRI India aims at motivating various stakeholders to engage in data-led climate policy discussions at the event. The sessions at Connect Karo 2020 will facilitate engagement between innovators, researchers, political representatives, government agencies, policymakers, businesses, and civil society members, serving as a platform for ideation and collaboration towards sustainable development.
