Dr. Sudhir Krishna is the Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, since August 2011. Prior to this, he was Special Secretary in the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India, where he was the National Mission Director for the Backward Regions Grant Fund (BRGF) Programme and a variety of other programmes for strengthening the capabilities of the rural local governments (the Panchayats) in providing improved server of public services. Dr. Krishna had held a variety of other senior positions in the GOI, in the State Governments of Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. He is currently engaged with the variety of schemes and programmes relating to urban governance and infrastructure, which include metro railway, city bus services and BRTS, public cycling, pedestrianisation, water supply, sanitation, solid and liquid waste management, city planning, urban governance reforms, and JNNURM. He holds a PhD in Public Finance from the Centre of Federal Studies, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi (2005). He is also an alumnus of the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh (USA) for his Master of Public Management (1992) and the Banaras Hindu University, for his Master of Science (1974) and Bachelor of Science (Hons.), both in Physics. He has published several books and articles on issues relating to decentralised governance and planning and public finance.
