Background :

2013 is set to witness a significant expansion of BRT Systems in Indian cities. Janmarg in Ahmedabad, India’s first fully-fledged BRTS launched in 2009, will be expanding its network from 62km to 88km this year. New BRT Systems are set to be launched in Indore, Rajkot and Surat. In addition, Mumbai is in the advanced stages of planning for a proposed 24 km BRTS corridor. Given these positive developments – new systems are being launched, cities with existing systems are rapidly expanding their network, and yet more cities are planning their own BRTS corridors – the next few years are rightly seen as a ‘tipping point’ for the expansion of BRTS across Indian cities. Nevertheless there remain significant challenges. Chief among these is the lack of a sufficiently broad, experienced and populated ecosystem of providers – from private bus operators to ITS solution providers as well as design and engineering consultants. The positioning of BRTS in cities where metro systems are under implementation or planning is also likely to be a challenge. This session will cover details of recent successes in implementing BRTS and the lessons they can provide for officials and practitioners seeking to ensure its rapid expansion.
