Background :

Indian cities require investments of $300-500 Billion in transport infrastructure to cope with this growth. Ensuring these investments are made in a manner that promotes sustainable transport will be essential for securing a low carbon future for Indian cities. Moreover, given public sector fiscal constraints, a majority of these investments are expected to originate from the private sector. The private sector will therefore play a critical role in mainstreaming sustainable transport - whether it is through real estate developers embracing sustainable transport principles in their projects, entrepreneurs creating companies that deliver sustainable transport services or financiers providing the capital that allows these outcomes to materialise. There is increasing enthusiasm within companies to be involved in the sustainable transport sphere. However, since such investments have historically been dominated by the state, there are significant knowledge gaps in terms of market opportunities, viable business models and regulatory requirements. In other words, an ecosystem that channels urban investments by the private sector towards sustainable transport outcomes remains lacking.
